You place each balance in either the <strong>debit<\/strong> or <strong>credit<\/strong> column. After you add the columns, the <strong>totals should match<\/strong>.<br>When these totals match, the ledger entries are <strong>arithmetically correct<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you finish the Trial Balance, you use its balances to prepare two main financial statements. These statements help you understand how well the business is doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Statement of Profit or Loss<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Statement of Profit or Loss<\/strong> shows the business\u2019s <strong>income and expenses<\/strong> for a period. As a result, it clearly tells you whether the business made a <strong>profit<\/strong> or a <strong>loss<\/strong>.<br>This statement helps you see the company\u2019s performance over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Statement of Financial Position<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Statement of Financial Position<\/strong> shows the company\u2019s <strong>assets, liabilities, and equity<\/strong> on a specific date. Because of this, it gives you a clear snapshot of the business\u2019s <strong>financial health<\/strong>.<br>You can easily see what the business owns and what it owes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Balance a Ledger Account<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Balancing a ledger account is simple when you follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Add<\/strong> the debit side and the credit side.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Find the higher total<\/strong>, and write it on both sides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Calculate the difference<\/strong>, and write it on the side with the smaller amount. This amount is the <strong>Balance carried down (Bal c\/d)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bring the balance forward<\/strong> by writing the same figure on the opposite side below the totals. This becomes the <strong>Balance brought down (Bal b\/d)<\/strong> for the next period.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Because these balances carry forward, they become the <strong>opening balances<\/strong> in the next accounting period.
